Description

"Drama, drama, drama - you know you love it! And Monica brings it in this super sexy and refreshing, un-put-down-able YA!!" - #1 NYT bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken

It’s the end of summer. Just before I start senior year with my two best friends in the whole world. Dustin and Emily are everything to me. We’ve been inseparable since middle school, and when we’re together, nothing can go wrong.

But things aren’t always what they seem. Em’s turned into a drunken mess who parties too much. Dustin and I have hooked up a few times—and now he’s ready to take our relationship to the next level. Yet I’m not sure I want things to change.  I’m scared if I take it any further with Dustin, our friendship will be ruined forever. Then there’s Ryan. The new guy. He’s hot. He flirts way too much. And Em has totally set her sights on him.

So when my best friend betrays me in the worst possible way, guess who’s there to help me pick up the pieces of my broken heart? Ryan. But he’s so confusing. Annoying. Sweet. Sexy. I want to trust him, yet he makes it so hard. What I really want is for everything to go back to the way it was before.

Before I found out that best friends make the worst kind of enemies.

If anyone likes drama this book is definitely for you. It has very dramatic scenes and high intensity. The book is very good quality and quantity.

  • A train wreck you can't look away from!

Actual Rating 3.5 stars Well, I said it before, but this was a train wreck that I just couldn't turn away from. There is A LOT of drama and aggravating behavior in this book. I wanted to slap, shake, and just scream at almost every character. The things that these "friends" do to and with each other was confusing and surprising, yet still plausible and believable. It's been a while since I was a teenager in high school, but I think it's a testament to the author's writing that she could create this chaotic and infuriating world, but still keep the reader interested and invested in these characters. The story itself though didn't really progress much, and seemed to just relive the same drama over and over again, without much forward movement. We do come to a cross roads at the end, but it ended so quickly that I thought I was missing pages! Ugh! I'm not a fan of cliffhangers! The cast of characters. Where to begin? I found almost everyone to be unlikeable at one point or another. It was hard being in Olivia's (Livvy) head. She does some truly frustrating things and I often wanted to scream at her to just be honest! So much of the drama and confusion could have been avoided if she just stopped playing games. Speaking of playing games, what the heck is going on the Emily (Em)? She is all over the place and is the actual plane crashing and burning in this book. She was the least likeable of all characters (and that's saying a lot, because there are some really terrible characters!) and I found nothing about her redeeming. I didn't really believe her friendship with Livvy at all. How could they be best friends? They were more like passive aggressive frenemies, only happy if they were better than the other. Dustin. Oh, Dustin. I wanted to like him since he's the only one who eventually was honest about the entire messed up situation and seemed to grow as a character through the book, but it was hard to not feel betrayed on behalf of Livvy. I guess I will never understand the teenage boy. Adding to the confusion is Ryan. I'm still not sure if he's just a total sleeze ball, or actually the only one being honest. All the relationships just seem so incestuous - everyone being with everyone, without regard to anyone else's feelings, or hiding their true feelings. The only character I liked was Amanda. She is still a typical teenage girl, with her own share of drama and angst, but she seems to be the most grounded of the bunch. I'm interested to see where things go with her and Tuttle (who also came across as a sleeze, but may actually be a good guy at heart?). We will have to see in book 2. Just a note: there is a lot of sex/sexual activity in this book. I guess I'm a little prudish, but this seemed to push the limits of being YA. I guess it was because the characters are teens, but I feel like this would have been better categorized as NA. Again though, the situations were plausible and I'm sure things like that do actually happen, which makes me terrified as a parent and happy I'm no longer a teenager! Overall, Just Friends was a compelling enough story to keep me interested, but the ending was too abrupt. I know I'm a glutton for punishment though and will be back for the next book when it comes out!

Just Friends, is full of drama. Exactly as you would expect being a teenager, in a small town. The book is based in Central California, which is where I'm from. Olivia aka Livy has been gone for the summer. And so many things have changed in the last few months. Even more changes with her best friends. With betrayal and heartbreak just about in every corner. It makes you wonder how Olivia really deals with all of it. The ending does end in a weird way. I really wanted to know what was going to happen with Olivia and Ryan! Gah. It was a well written story and it kept me interested till the end. Overall, I give this Four Boundless Stars....Lissa

So Addicting! But Fantastic! Be prepared to take a trip down memory lane to those awkward, self centered teenager years where your parents are the enemy and you think you know it all. This teenage triangle just does not let up. This intense and captivating story takes on some teenage issues that will have you wishing you could help these characters make the right decisions. But with teenagers experiencing love and wanting to be popular and cool, making the right decision is never in their mind set, and leads to some chaotic situations. Ms. Murphy really brings it with a Super Dose of Angst, a lot of sexy times, as well as none stop drama. I could not put this down. So many emotions in this book to go through with these great characters such as love, hate, tears, fear, happy, sad and it all leads to a Fantastic and real story. Can't wait to find out what happens next. Highly Recommended! Loved it! Received a complimentary copy from the author in exchange for an honest review!

OMG!! Monica, what have you done- a cliffhanger?! I'm totally was not expecting this so now I'm left wondering what will happen next!? I couldn't put this book down -the first night I read 82% and stayed up till 4 AM and ended up getting only 2 1/2 hours of sleep! This Book is filled with teenage drama! I felt like I was back in time in high school! Teenage girls are so catty!! I wanna claw their eyes out lol! After Olivia has been deceived by Emily and Dustin, she ends spending a lot of time with new football player Ryan (who Em used to date). Yeah, there is so much partner swapping in this book! Dustin states multiple times how sorry he is for what happened and I wonder if maybe she shouldn't give him a chance since they were claiming they were only "just friends"… And I can't figure out if Ryan's legitimately into Olivia or if he's just totally playing her... I'm thinking player! And as for Em, she's such a conniving little Witch with a capital B!! I would totally kick her to the curb! So I'm totally left wondering who will end up with who?! Can't wait for the next installment!! I was given a copy in exchange for my honest review.
  • High School Drama!

“Just Friends” is author Monica Murphy’s newest young adult book, and I am left torn after completing this book. You see, this book has all of the qualities that I consistently love about Monica’s books: it is well-written, engaging, and hard to put down; the characters are developed and multi-faceted; and the storyline provides twists and turns. This story explores the complexity of teenagers on the brink of adulthood, navigating friendships and first loves. The characters’ moments of utter joy turn to sheer heartache and then back again in a moment, and all of those overwhelming emotions that I remember feeling as a teenager came back vividly to me as well. But, why am I torn…because by the end of the book I am left wanting, or more accurately needing, to know more. Thank goodness Monica is planning to write additional books about these characters and their friends. *I was given an advanced copy of this story in exchange for an honest review.

This is a fantastic YA read! It's a great look at how much can change in that last year of high school. Long time friends become different and distant, enemies become friends, new people enter your world. Knowing that the decisions you make now will have a huge impact on how your friendships move forward makes things doubly hard. Why can't things stay as they were....for just one more year at least. That's all Olivia wanted but it just wasn't to be. Navigating new friendships and new relationships are sometimes difficult. Knowing the impact it will have on others can make you questions yourself but Olivia finds herself in exactly that situation. This is a wonderful story and very well done but it's not the whole story! Olivia, Ryan, Emily, & Dustin's story will continue in the next book. You've been warned!! Even knowing that, you don't want to miss this one! I highly recommend it.
